Pew: 13 Million Americans Made Online Hurricane Donations

Thirteen million people in the United States, or 9 percent of Internet users, made an online donation in the aftermath of hurricanes Katrina and Rita this year, according to survey results released Friday by the Pew Internet & American Life Project.


The study was conducted between Sept. 14 and Oct. 13 by Princeton Survey Research Assoc. Int'l. A random sample of 2,251 U.S. adults was surveyed by telephone. The margin of error is plus or minus 2 percentage points based on the full sample.


Other findings included that 18 percent of Internet users said they had ever made an online donation, up from 13 percent in a January 2005 survey.


In addition, 50 percent of Internet users had used the Web to get news on the Gulf Coast hurricanes, with 73 percent of them turning to Web sites of mainstream media outlets.
