OfficeMax Content With Holiday Sales

OfficeMax's holiday selling season from Thanksgiving through Christmas met expectations, rising more than 10 percent on a same-store basis from last year, the company said yesterday.

OfficeMax said last month that sales on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, nearly doubled from the same day a year earlier.

Its big sellers for the season included digital cameras; all-in-one machines that let users print, fax, scan and copy; DVD-RWs and office chairs.

Gross profit merchandise margins traditionally accelerate in January, the company said, offsetting lower margins associated with its electronics sales in the holiday period. In November, the company said it expects to be profitable for its full fiscal year, which ends Jan. 25.
