Nielsen: Online Shoppers Hit 48 Million

A study by television audience measurement company Nielsen Media Research, New York, and CommerceNet, Palo Alto, CA, a nonprofit organization promoting e-commerce solutions, shows the number of Web shoppers -- those who check out or compare products and services on the Web -- has reached 48 million.


The study, based on information gathered in June, found the number of Internet users over age 16 in the United States and Canada is 79 million while the number of people buying products and services on the Web has reached 20 million. It also found that 43 percent of Internet users are women.
