Gannett Co., publisher of USA Today and 84 other daily newspapers, released its first quarter earnings today, marking an 8% dip in revenue for the three months. The company had not returned calls as of press time.

The New York Times Company released its first quarter 2008 results on April 17, reporting that total revenues had dropped to $747.9 million — a 4.9% decrease from the $786 million reported in the first quarter of last year.
 

New female-targeted green living magazine debuting in August

The independently published quarterly will be sold via subscription and at bookstores and select grocery stores. New daily targets Baltimore's young professionals

The Baltimore Sun, with the help of marketing communications firm MGH, launched a free daily on Monday. The new paper, b, targets 20- and 30-year-olds in and around Baltimore. It also has an online component — bthesite.com — which features blogs, news and user-generated content. Select user-generated pieces will be reprinted in the print edition.

As I sat through a recent Circulation Day seminar on "Direct Mail Creative Breakthroughs & Trends" I was astounded to think that the voucher was still a creative breakthrough. The voucher, for many years, has played a prominent role for many publishers in their direct mail campaigns. Creative testing has focused on improving the voucher through tweaks to envelopes, forms, adding brochures, and buckslips. Not what I consider a creative breakthrough, but for many circulators this format has saved their business.

Fulfillment Manager

LPI Media, publisher of magazines aimed at the gay market, is looking for a Fulfillment Manager in New York to manage three overall areas of responsibility for all magazines.

1. Circulation Fulfillment: To manage circulation fulfillment for all LPI and SpecPub magazines. In this area, the fulfillment manager has the day-to-day responsibility for supervising the chosen fulfillment vendor, currently Automated Resources Group Inc, (ARGI), for both companies.

2. Renewal and Billing Marketing: The fulfillment manager will be responsible for the processing, testing and effectiveness of all billing and renewal efforts, including both regular mailed and emailed efforts.

3. Circulation Modeling: Maintain and run the Circulation Model for each publication. This includes monthly balancing, running reports, writing reports as needed and working with the Circulation Director to develop statistical analysis to identify opportunities and shortcomings through predictive modeling.

Skills and Experience Required:

The Fulfillment and Online Marketing Manager should have a minimum of 3 to 5 years experience in magazine circulation fulfillment and/or in closely related direct response marketing preferably with an emphasis in either online marketing or billing and renewals. BS/BA preferred.

The Fulfillment Manager should have experience with the supervision of outside fulfillment vendors.

Individual should combine promotional and analytical skills. Knowledge of the gay and lesbian market, especially as relates to publishing, is highly recommended.

Individual is expected to be familiar with operating a PC and be expert in appropriate spreadsheet and word processing programs.

Must be comfortable working with sexualized materials, including photos and text.
