Newsday reportedly courting buyers

Sam Zell, CEO of Tribune Co., is reportedly considering buyout offers for daily title Newsday. In its earnings report, released last week, Tribune Co. posted a $78 million loss from continuing operations for the fourth quarter of 2007. The company reported income from continuing operations of $233 million the previous year. Operating revenues for the same period were down 12% this year, to $1.27 billion.
 

QuadrantOne doubles in size one month after launch

Recently launched online advertising alliance QuadrantOne, which is owned by Tribune Co., Gannett Co. Inc., Hearst Corp. and The New York Times Co., has announced a partnership with the Newspaper Consortium, a group of 26 newspaper companies. It now represents more than 250 newspapers and 25% of the daily newspapers in the US.
 

French-language More to enter Canadian market

Meredith Corp. is launching a French-language edition of its More magazine in Canada. More will be licensed to Transcontinental Inc., a Canadian publishing and distribution company. Transcontinental signed a similar agreement with Meredith in 2007, when it launched an English-language version of More in Canada.
 

Impremedia hires industry vet to grow digital sales

Hispanic news and information company ImpreMedia has hired Liz Sarachek Blacker as SVP of online sales. The newly created position puts Sarachek Blacker in charge of developing and executing sales programs for ImpreMedia's digital network.
 

ABC intends to simplify circ audits

The Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC) board has given its initial approval to a set of rule changes for circulation audits of US newspapers. The rule changes, intended to simplify existing ABC rules, reduce audit costs and create more flexibility for publishers, should be formally approved at the board meeting in July. The first of these modifications will go into effect on April 1, 2009.

Audit rules approved by the Audit Bureau of Circulations board last week seem to mark a trend in circulation measurement: faster, more precise reports that bring print audits closer to the sort of metrics used by other media. The ABC's new rules were intended to simplify current audit rules and make audit reports more useful to advertisers and publishers.
