In the wake of its holiday data breach, Target is offering free credit monitoring and identity theft protection to all customers who shopped its U.S. stores, not just the estimated 70 million who were affected by scammers.

Customers can visit www.creditmonitoring.target.com to receive an activation code and obtain details on free services from ProtectMyID, an Experian service that helps individuals understand and keep track of their credit reports, as well as monitor for and resolve identity theft.

Customers who take advantage of the offer receive a complimentary copy of their credit report, daily credit monitoring, identity theft insurance (except where prohibited by law), and access to a fraud resolution agent. The offer is good for 12 months, after which customers will have the option to renew the service at their own expense, though free access to the agent will continue after expiration of the one-year period.

Earlier this week, Target released results of an internal investigation finding that some 70 million customers were affected by the breach and that, in addition to payment card data, some customers' names, phone numbers, and mailing and email addresses were obtained.
