Six win Silver Apples in New York
The Direct Marketing Club of New York presented Silver Apple Awards to six industry standouts at an awards gala at the Edison Ballroom in the Big Apple last night. Silver Apples are presented annually to “direct marketers who distinguish themselves in their craft as well as in their involvement in the community,” according to Executive Director Stuart Boysen.
Richard Vergara, VP, MeritDirect, who was a co-owner of LDSGroup, director of the publishing group at MKTG Services, and has organized and taught courses in direct marketing at New York University
Deborah Holland, EVP, Publishers Clearing House, who has served on the Direct Marketing Educational Foundation (now MarketingEdge), the Direct Marketing Association committee on ethical business practices, and the board of the Lucerna Fund, which produces recordings for the blind
Gary Laben, CEO, KBM Group and President, Wunderman Data & Insights, who serves on the MarketingEdge chairman's advisory council, as is a former VP marketing of Experian and board member of the DMA's Ethics Policy Committee
Liberta Abbondante, SVP, Consumer Marketing, Hearst Magazines, who has held consumer marketing and circulation positions at Forbes, Dow Jones, and Reader's Digest and sits on the board of the Alliance for Audited Media
Pete Carney, president, Carney Direct Marketing, who has spent 34 years in the list business at firms such as Mal Dunn, Mail Marketing, and Equifax and serves as a DMA spokesman on industry practices and ethics in California
Richard Hochhauser, Baruch College professor and ex-CEO, Harte-Hanks, a former DMA chairman and board member of Texas A&M's Center for Retailing Studies who serves on the boards of two nonprofits, is a trustee of the Jewish Museum, and is a director of Reach of the World
Honored with a special Golden Apple award was veteran direct marketer Arthur Blumenfield, the founder of BMI Fulfillment Services who is credited with developing the first corporate data processing center at Standard Oil of New Jersey, which has since been incorporated with ExxonMobil.
