Rakuten Marketing, a Japanese Internet services company, which drew notice last year with a $100 million investment in Pinterest, announced an agreement to acquire PopShops, a seven-year-old company that provides data analytics and coupon-feed services to online marketers.

According to Rakuten, PopShops provides more than 25,000 publishers and 4,000 advertisers access to real-time product information on millions of products. PopShops' business is based on the premise that incomplete or outdated product information, such as pricing or promotional offer deadlines, results in lost sales for advertisers and e-commerce sites. The acquired company, to be known as Rakuten PopShops, provides them with current product, coupon, and deal information.

“Through this acquisition, we'll strengthen our assets across all of the vital areas of digital marketing that will benefit from PopShops's powerful analytics engine,” said Yaz Lida, CEO of Rakuten Marketing.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
