Pinterest announced yesterday it had acquired image-recognition startup VisualGraph for an undisclosed sum. The company's technology combines visual object recognition with search and machine-learning infrastructures to build data files based on images instead of words.

Using VisualGraph's capabilities, Pinterest would be able to track objects commonly pinned by its users, such as short skirts or compact cars, and use the data to target relevant ads and other content to them.

“We are excited for the opportunity to combine machine vision with human vision and curation, and to build a visual discovery experience that is both aesthetically appealing and immensely useful for people everywhere,”  wrote VisualGaph co-founder Kevin Jing in a note announcing the deal on the company's website.
