McDonald's Creates Chief Digital Officer Post

McDonald's Corporation has hired former Amazon and Yahoo executive Atif Rafiq as the company's first chief digital officer, effective October 21.

Rafiq will oversee McDonald's global digital strategy with a focus on e-commerce growth and a modernized restaurant experience, the company said in a statement.

In that statement, McDonald's Chief Brand Officer Steve Easterbrook—to whom Rafiq will report—pointed out the omnichannel way in which customers interact with the brand, and the growing importance of digital. "Atif will lead a more coordinated and comprehensive digital strategy for our global organization as we deepen our connection with our customers,” Easterbrook said. “His cutting-edge thinking, background and expertise will help us drive even greater innovation in this arena."

The creation of the chief digital officer post at McDonald's underscores the growing necessity for brands to create seamless experiences across multiple digital channels.

Rafiq's previous background is firmly in technology. His working experience includes stints as the general manager of Kindle Direct Publishing at Amazon and, before that, as head of global product marketing and strategy at Yahoo's Y! News Division.
