Facebook Appoints Its First CMO

Who is it: Facebook has appointed Gary Briggs as its VP and CMO. Briggs has an extensive and notable marketing career, having served in such roles as SVP of marketing at Motorola Mobility, VP of consumer marketing at Google, and SVP and CMO of eBay North America. Additionally, Briggs was chairman and CEO at Plastic Jungle, and is an adviser to LifeLock and a board member of Rainmaker. Earlier in his career Briggs was director of brand strategy at IBM and director, brand Pepsi, at Pepsi Cola.

What's his role: Briggs will lead marketing strategy for the social network.

WIIFM: As marketers look to engage more and more with customers on Facebook, Facebook is looking to engage with those marketers. “The social media world has really turned into building relationships,” Facebook's Industry Lead of Global Marketing Solutions Kirstin said at a recent DMCNY event. “It's really about how people feel about you over time.”
