Virginia Opens Procurement Site

Virginia yesterday debuted eVA, a procurement Web site designed to automate government purchasing activities.

The site lists contractors, vendors, information about how to join the site and listings of jobs that already have been bid for. Services planned for the coming months include auctions, online bidding and solicitation processing.

When fully implemented, the state said, it expects to have tens of thousands of suppliers and more than 100 state agencies and universities conducting about $1 billion in business through eVA. Local governments and school districts also may participate.

The site was developed and is managed by the state's Department of General Services. American Management Systems, a business and information-technology consulting firm in Fairfax, VA, is hosting the system.

Six Virginia agencies are using eVA: the departments of General Services, Accounts, Treasury, State Police and Health and the central offices of the Virginia Community College System.
