Urban Outfitters Inc. said yesterday that net income in the fiscal fourth quarter ended Jan. 31 increased 69.4 percent to $5.8 million from $3.4 million in last year's comparable quarter.

Net income in the 12 months ended Jan. 31 was up 43 percent to $15 million from $10.5 million in the previous fiscal year.

Net sales in the recently concluded quarter rose 21.4 percent to $103.9 million from $85.6 million in the prior year's comparable quarter. Net sales in the 12 months ended Jan. 31 increased 18.2 percent to $349 million from $295.3 million in the prior comparable 12-month period. The increase was attributed to a $56 million, or 20.4 percent, increase in retail segment sales, offset in part by a $2.3 million decline in Free People's wholesale sales.

Direct-to-consumer sales increased $3.2 million, or 14.5 percent, and totaled $21.665 million in the 12 months ended Jan. 31, 2001, and climbed to $24.815 million in the comparable period that ended Jan. 31, 2002.

DTC sales in the three months ended Jan. 31, 2001, totaled $7.631 million and reached $7.923 million in the comparable period that ended Jan. 31, 2002.

The company's numerous sales channels include urbn.com as well as the Anthropologie catalog and Web site.
