Retailers rush to get ebook readers out by holiday

Christmas is getting close and Barnes & Noble still doesn't know if people who preordered their new ebook reader Nook will get them in time. Last week at the Media Bistro eBook Reader Summit, Steve Haber, president of Sony's digital reading business division, spoke about the new Sony book reader that is coming out for Christmas, as the moderator of the panel joked, “This Christmas?”

It seems like this is the year to rush out the ebook readers to compete with Amazon's heavy push on the kindle. Hopefully retailers will learn from their mistakes next year and focus more on getting the product right and the content available and avoid this last minute race.

Barnes & Noble is being smart though. They said that most customer who pre-ordered the Nook should get it by Christmas, but those who don't will get a $100 gift certificate along with their readers after the holiday.
