Office Depot's director of environmental affairs has been recognized for his efforts to raise awareness of environmental issues by the nonprofit group ForestLeadership.

Tyler Elm was named a winner of the 2004 ForestLeadership Communications Award yesterday during the ForestLeadership Conference in Toronto. The award is ForestLeadership's first communication award and honors individuals and organizations in North America committed to furthering sustainable forestry at the local, national and international level.

In addition to developing and implementing Office Depot's global environmental strategy, Elm also served as a board member with the Forest Practices Board of British Columbia.

Office Depot's environmental initiatives include selling paper containing 35 percent post-consumer waste and thousands of other products containing recycled substances. In 2004, it introduced Eco-Friendly Binders, made of 100 percent recycled materials. In January, Office Depot released the second edition of its Green Book catalog of environmentally preferable products, which is printed on 100 percent post-consumer waste paper.
