New Sears Store Format Debuts in Spring

Sears, Roebuck and Co. unveiled a midsize, off-mall store format this week that leverages its merger with Kmart Holding Corp., Troy, MI.

The first 25 Sears Essentials stores are scheduled to open this spring. They will offer traditional Sears items such as appliances, lawn and garden, tools, electronics, apparel and home fashions along with products found at Kmart, such as health and beauty, pantry, household and paper products, pet supplies and toys.

Sears brands Kenmore, Craftsman and Apostrophe will be part of the merchandising mix. There is no official word yet on whether Kmart brands such as Martha Stewart Everyday and Thalia Sodi will be in evidence.

The stores will feature a one-level racetrack design, exit cashiering and a centralized customer service center. The stores will be mainly in large, densely populated markets.
