Doll Cataloger Halts Business

Consumers looking to make last-minute purchases from cataloger My Twinn during the holiday season had to find other options after the company suspended operations Dec. 19.

"For the past two years we have tried to satisfy several millions of dollars in lingering obligations arising from the 2001 holiday season," said a note on mytwinn.com, which was last updated Dec. 30. The note cites the Sept. 11 terrorist attack, a shortage of working capital and a difficult economy as among the reasons for the decision.

CEO Kenn Thiess said the Greenwood Village, CO, company had hoped to expand its customer base by lowering the average price of a doll from $140 to $79, according to Denver television station KUSA-TV's Web site.

However, the company never recovered from losses following the terrorist attack and subsequent anthrax scare. Thiess also reportedly said the events affected customers' willingness to look at and order from a catalog mailed during the first week of September 2001.
