Amazon launches same-day delivery

Amazon.com on October 15 launched same-day delivery for thousands of items in seven major cities. The online retailer has also expanded its Saturday delivery options, with items ordered before the cut-off time on Thursday and using two-day shipping now being delivered on Saturday instead of Monday.

“One of our core missions is to provide low prices, selection and convenience,” said Sally Fouts, a spokesperson for Amazon. Same-day delivery “falls into the convenience category,” she continued, adding that Amazon is constantly striving to speed up shipping times for customers.

The cities where same-delivery is available are New York, Philadelphia, Boston, Baltimore, Las Vegas, Seattle and Washington D.C. The service will be extended to Chicago, Indianapolis and Phoenix in the coming months.

Shoppers in the cities where the service is available will be presented with messaging informing them that their order can be delivered the same day if cut off time hasn't passed.

Those who have joined Amazon's annual membership program Amazon Prime will pay $5.99 per item for same-day delivery. For others, the cost ranges from $1.99 per pound or item to $3.99 per pound or item, with a cap set between $13.99 and $18.99 for most orders. The order cut-off times in order to qualify for same-day delivery range between 10 am and 1 pm.
