Mobile Web surfing waiting on usability, security: Study

Concerns about usability and security are the largest obstacles to mainstream mobile commerce, according to a nationwide survey of 1,000 adults announced by Molecular Inc.

The Watertown, MA-based Internet consulting firm said the results show that consumers are ready for mobile Web surfing and transacting, but Web sites are not yet sufficient enough.

The survey administered by Kelton Research found that one out of four American adults or 26 percent would use their mobile phone or handheld device to access the Web if mobile Web pages were easier to navigate. For Americans between the ages of 18 and 44, acceptance of mobile Web surfing is even higher at 32 percent.

Twenty-eight percent of cell phone users reported that they would like to use their phone or handheld device for purchases and financial transactions.

However, more than half or 58 percent disagreed that data sent over a mobile phone or handheld device is as safe as data sent from their personal computer. Molecular commissioned Kelton Research, Los Angeles, to conduct the mobile Web spot survey in early November.
