BlackBerry CMO Frank Boulben was shown the door this morning along with COO Kristian Tear and CFO Brian Bidulka, all hires of Thorsten Heins, who departed as the chief executive of the embattled mobile industry player earlier this month.

Boulben had come under fire in various quarters for the lackluster launch of BlackBerry 10. Under a discussion heading of "Should Frank Boulben Be Fired?" on the discussion site CrackBerry, one user posted as long ago as August, "I think it's time to discuss the elephant in the room... BB's marketing is in an absolutely horrendous state."

"I thank Kristian and Frank for their efforts on behalf of BlackBerry," said interim CEO John Chen in a statement announcing the moves. "I look forward to working more directly with the talented teams of engineers, and the sales and marketing teams around the world to facilitate the BlackBerry turn-around and to drive innovation."

Noting that the company continued to maintain a strong cash position, Chen insisted BlackBerry would continue on as a "top provider of trusted and secure mobile device management solutions."
