Mississippi DNC List Gains Ground
Supporters of a proposed Mississippi do-not-call list law won a victory earlier this month when the bill passed the public utilities committees in both houses of the state legislature.The state Senate and the House of Representatives could vote on the bill this week. If the bill is passed, Mississippi would become the 14th state to pass DNC list legislation.
In addition to creating a DNC list, the bill would ban telemarketing in the state on Sundays. The proposal, sponsored by state Sen. Tommy Robertson, R-Moss Point, and state Rep. Les Barnett, R-Biloxi, would allow the state to fine telemarketers up to $5,000 for each violation.
A total of 26 states -- including Texas and California, the two most populous states in the nation -- are considering DNC list legislation. Last month a committee in the Virginia state legislature delayed consideration of a proposed DNC list law after hearing testimony against it from representatives of the American Teleservices Association.
