Microsoft yesterday said it shipped its second test version of its SQL Server 2000 database.

The new system from the Redmond, WA-based software giant stores and manages Web content and other information.

The software is expected to compete with database products from industry leaders such as Oracle, IBM and Informix.

Microsoft shipped test samples to 200,000 customers worldwide.

An earlier version of the new SQL was tested last fall among several hundred Microsoft customers.

The final SQL version is expected to be released this summer.
