Media Chains Acquire Cross-Channel Web Marketer

Gannett Co., Knight Ridder and Tribune Co. have jointly purchased Web-based marketing provider CrossMedia Services, the three companies said yesterday.

The value of the acquisition was not disclosed. CrossMedia Services is focused on marketing to "cross-channel" shoppers, consumers who search for products in one media and then buy at retail.

An example would be a consumer who uses newspaper ads to look for sales and then makes purchases at the store. CrossMedia takes print-based retail promotions and turns them into searchable interactive formats online through its SmartCircular and SmartCatalog services, according to CrossMedia.

Other joint ventures by Gannett, Knight Ridder and Tribune include CareerBuilder.com, Cars.com and Apartments.com.
