Wisconsin Fines Telemarketer on No-Call Law

A state judge fined Platinum Marketing Inc. for violations of Wisconsin's no-call law on 44 occasions involving prerecorded messages, the state attorney general's office said last week.

Platinum Marketing, Johnson City, TN, must pay a fine of $6,556 and costs and fees of $5,038.20 under the ruling by Dane County Circuit Judge Michael Nowakowski.

Prerecorded messages to Wisconsin residents, some of whom were on the state's no-call list, told consumers they had won a prize and could collect by dialing a toll-free number, according to the attorney general.

However, those who called the number learned they had to travel to a resort in the state to hear a time-share presentation to claim the prize, the attorney general said. The company also failed to register in Wisconsin as a telemarketer, according to the state.

No-call registry violations topped the list of common complaints filed by Wisconsin consumers with the state Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection released last week. Wisconsin maintains a no-call list separate from the national registry maintained by the Federal Trade Commission.
