Wientzen Meets With Treasury Officials

Direct Marketing Association president/CEO H. Robert Wientzen met last week with U.S. Treasury officials who are leading the White House's efforts to control postal costs.

The meeting focused on the next steps toward reform of the law, enacted in 1970, under which the USPS today operates.

Wientzen shared the direct and interactive marketing industry's perspectives on the future of the USPS and mailers' and shippers' needs for affordable, universal postal services, emphasizing the pressing need for continued cost-containment measures and increased productivity at the USPS as well as ways to build mail volume.

While a DMA spokesman would not comment, an insider said the talks probably centered around forming a presidential commission on postal reform that would propose ways to reform the country's public mail system. This concept has been steadily gaining steam ever since a House of Representatives bill to overhaul the USPS failed in a committee vote in June. In addition, a report said that White House officials earlier this month publicly signaled again that the administration might be open to the idea.
