Verizon Wireless Sues Telemarketers Over Cell Phone Calls

Share this content:
Verizon Wireless said yesterday that it filed two lawsuits claiming telemarketing companies illegally solicited its wireless customers using auto-dialers and prerecorded messages.

The carrier claimed Intelligent Alternatives, San Diego, and Resort Marketing Trends, Coral Springs, FL, violated the federal Telephone Consumer Protection Act and state laws. It seeks injunctions against the companies.

In the lawsuits, which were filed separately, Verizon said the companies made hundreds of thousands of calls to its cell-phone customers.

"These lawsuits serve notice once again to any company, organization or individual who seeks to infringe on our customers' privacy," Steven Zipperstein, Verizon Wireless general counsel, said in a statement. "Wireless users view cell phones as one of their last refuges from telemarketing intrusion and other unwanted, unsolicited calls and messages."

In June 2004, Verizon said it would not take part in a national wireless phone directory as part of its efforts to protect its customers' privacy.
