Verizon Wireless settles junk fax case

Verizon Wireless has reached a settlement in a class-action lawsuit in Baton Rouge federal court over faxing unsolicited advertisements for its products.

"We have a policy in place that prohibits any blast campaigns for products or services to people who have not consented," said Patrick Kimball, public relations manager, Verizon Wireless.

The class action suit alleges Verizon Wireless, Basking Ridge, NJ, sent out more than 10,000 junk faxes to Louisiana, Florida and Alabama businesses under the Telephone Consumer Protection Act, which prohibits most unsolicited fax advertisements.

As part of the settlement, Verizon Wireless has admitted no liability, Kimball said. However, the company has agreed to pay $397 per claimant, which number approximately 10,000. Verizon Wireless will also pay laywers fees, which reportedly totaled $2.3 million.

"That should be the end of it," Kimball said.
