Turnaround Is Coming, Forbes Tells Circulation Execs

NEW YORK -- Though the publishing industry is experiencing its greatest challenges since the 1930s, the situation will improve within several months, Steve Forbes told attendees at the Direct Marketing Association's 16th annual Circulation Day yesterday.

Forbes, president/CEO of Forbes and editor-in-chief of Forbes magazine, also stressed that the Internet and print media could co-exist and not cannibalize each other.

Distribution and the inefficiency of the U.S. Postal Service are among the biggest challenges facing the publishing industry as it moves forward, Forbes said.

"There's no reason why an institution employing 900,000 people should keep raising prices and providing insufficient service," he told the room full of circulation executives at the Marriott Marquis.
