Sales Transactions Over the Web Soar, Survey Finds

The Global Trading Web Association yesterday released transactional and sales volume data indicating that activity among e-marketplaces is growing at an aggressive rate. The GTWA said the data offer an endorsement of the strength of electronic commerce.

The data showed GTWA e-marketplace transactions have increased from 106,168 to 884,166, an increase of 733 percent from January-June 2000 to January-June 2001. It is projecting 2001 year-end transactions to reach 2.14 million.

Among GTWA members, the sales volume reported rose from $115 million during the first two quarters of 2000 to $3.7 billion for the first two quarters of 2001, a 3,110 percent increase. Projected 2001 year-end sales volume is expected to reach $6.24 billion.

Product offerings and selections are also increasing. The number of SKUs has increased from 4.32 million to 17.14 million for the period of June 2000 to June 2001. According to GTWA, the projected 2001 year-end total product offerings will reach 23.8 million.

The GTWA represents an independent electronic trading network of buyers and suppliers. It has 31 members that provide electronic trading services for more than 250,000 companies in more than 100 countries. GTWA members offer a number of trading services including representation of suppliers to large numbers of buyers, transaction processing services and other logistical commerce-clearing services.
