Rosie Ends Publishing Deal

One of the few bright spots in publishing over the past few years will go dark soon based on an announcement yesterday that Rosie O'Donnell pulled out of Rosie magazine -- a joint venture between O'Donnell and Gruner + Jahr USA Publishing.

O'Donnell and G+J USA made separate announcements of the terminated agreement yesterday. This comes after months of feuding between the two sides over editorial control of the publication.

Rosie hit newsstands in April 2001 as a replacement for G+J's ailing McCall's publication. It immediately took off and, according to G+J, was on its way to profitability.

Though G+J claimed a readership of 17 million for Rosie, its subscriber mailing list contains 2.5 million active subscribers, according to a data card for the file. List firm Millard Group Inc., Peterborough, NH, manages the file.

Reportedly, the Audit Bureau of Circulations showed a paid circulation figure of 3.5 million for the six months ending June 30. The figure for the previous six months had been 3.6 million.

It is unclear what G+J will do about Rosie's subscribers when the magazine ceases publication.
