No-Call Complaints Double in Week

The Federal Trade Commission said Friday it had collected a total of 34,000 consumer complaints about no-call list violations as of Oct. 24, more than doubling the total number of complaints in seven days.

The agency's report came two weeks after the FTC belatedly began taking complaints of list violations on Oct. 11, an event that was delayed by industry court challenges to the no-call rules. As of Oct. 17, the end of the first week in which an FTC consumer-complaint hotline was available, the agency had collected 15,000 complaints of violations.

The FTC did not report the nature of the complaints or whether some resulted from exempted charitable solicitations or existing-relationship calls, and FTC representatives did not return calls for comment late on Oct. 24.

Though the FTC began taking complaints Oct. 11, telemarketers who had been unable to obtain a copy of the no-call list due to the court proceedings were given a grace period until Oct. 17 to begin complying.

About 28,000 organizations had downloaded the list as of Oct. 24, up 7,000 from the report on Oct. 17, the FTC said. About 53.7 million phone numbers are registered for the list.
