Global Trust Mark Proposed At Paris Privacy Talks

Share this content:
Corporate leaders discussed the challenge of developing international privacy policy in relation to marketing and trade issues at this week's Global Business Dialogue on Electronic Commerce in Paris.

Included in the discussions were consumer confidence, intellectual property, user rights, tax issues and the security of e-mail and file transmissions across international borders.

The meeting was created to help foster standardized self-regulatory policies on privacy and e-commerce, which will lead to more industry growth. Twenty-nine leaders speaking on behalf of major companies attended, including Time Warner Inc., New York; America Online Inc., Lynchberg, VA; Walt Disney, Los Angeles; Fujitsu Ltd., Hong Kong; and Vivendi SA, Paris.

The group presented its ideas to about 350 participants, including a proposal for an international trust mark - a GBDE seal of approval - that would be awarded to companies in compliance with the group's proposed standards. Seals like TRUSTe, WebTrust and BBBonline are currently in use in the United States.
