FTC Starts Authentication Site

The Federal Trade Commission launched an e-mail authentication Web site this week that allows technologists to share the results of their tests on domain-level authentication standards.

The FTC set up the site because proponents of five domain-level authentication standards, including Yahoo's DomainKeys and Microsoft's Sender ID programs, agreed to make their testing results public at the FTC and Department of Commerce's E-Mail Authentication Summit in 2004.

"The proponents of these five standards and all other members of the public who are testing domain-level authentication standards are invited to submit their testing results to the FTC," the commission said in a statement, "and to help identify domain-level authentication standards that aid the fight against spam and phishing, are inexpensive and simple to implement, and do not negatively impact the e-mail system."
