The Federal Trade Commission posted its new membership lists Friday for its new Advisory Committee for Online Access and Security. The FTC says it hopes the commission will encourage more commercial Web sites to provide online consumers with reasonable access to personal information collected about them as well as adequate protection of data and information on how it's used.

One of the appointees, Deirdre Mulligan, an attorney at the Center for Democracy and Technology in Washington, said: "The Committee will be working on some of the most difficult issues for achieving real privacy for individuals online."

The FTC said it received and considered nominations for approximately 190 candidates, all of whom were highly qualified. In the final analysis, however, the FTC was able to appoint 40 members.
