FCC Releases Wireless Domain List

The Federal Communications Commission this week announced the release of a list of wireless domain names to prevent commercial e-mailers from sending solicitations to wireless e-mail addresses.

The CAN-SPAM Act prohibits sending unsolicited commercial e-mails and text messages to wireless devices such as cell phones. Commercial e-mailers will have 30 days to cease e-mailing the domain names and must download updates from the list at least once a month, the FCC said.

The list is available at fcc.gov/cgb/policy by clicking on "Download Registered Domain Names." Commercial e-mailers must avoid e-mails to all domain names on the list as well as any other domain they know to be associated with a wireless subscription.

Transactional and relationship messages, such as notifications and account status, may be sent to wireless domains. However, if any part of the message is deemed commercial, the entire message is banned.
