DNC List in Connecticut Doubles in Size

The number of consumer households registered for Connecticut's do-not-call list has nearly doubled since March, according to the state's Department of Consumer Protection.

Approximately 619,000 households are now on the list, up from approximately 328,000 in March, consumer protection officials said. The DNC list now comprises nearly half of Connecticut's total 1.3 million households.

However, the pace of consumers registering to the list via phone and mail, which took effect Jan.1, has slowed down in recent months. Approximately 80,000 consumers registered for the list by phone or mail in the first quarter of this year, compared to 192,000 who registered during the last quarter of 2000 when consumers were allowed to pre-register.

That count does not include the remaining consumers on the list, more than 300,000, who have registered on the Internet.

Registration in Connecticut is free. The state's DNC list is published quarterly by the Direct Marketing Association, which also manages its own Telephone Preference Service DNC list that all DMA members are required to use.

Maine requires telemarketers to use the telephone preference list. Wyoming passed similar legislation earlier this year.
