DMA Withdraws Petition on Wireless Domains

The Direct Marketing Association and E-Mail Service Provider Coalition withdrew a petition yesterday asking the Federal Communications Commission to suspend its rules concerning the sending of commercial e-mails to wireless addresses.

The FCC issued a list of domains associated with wireless e-mail addresses in February and gave e-mailers 30 days to cease sending e-mails to the domains without express consent. However, e-mailers were concerned that many of the domains had both wireless and non-wireless e-mail addresses, cutting off a large number of non-wireless addresses from their e-mails.

The DMA and ESPC filed their petition with the FCC in March, asking for a 90-day waiver of the rule to delay its implementation. E-mailers needed more time to resolve the issue and get needed permissions from subscribers, the DMA said.

However, the FCC later updated its list of wireless domains and removed those that included non-wireless subscribers, the DMA said. As a result, the two trade groups withdrew their petition.

The FCC's updated wireless domain list is available at fcc.gov/cgb/policy/DomainNameDownload.html. Commercial e-mailers should check the list regularly for updates, the DMA said.
