ATA Asks Members to 'Dig Deep' for DNC Court Fight

NEW ORLEANS -- American Teleservices Association leadership urged members yesterday to "dig deep" into their pockets to support an anticipated legal challenge to a federal no-call registry.

Outgoing ATA chairman Bill Miklas issued the call during his farewell speech at the opening general session of the ATA's 19th Annual Convention & Exhibition, held here at the Marriott hotel. The ATA plans to challenge the national do-not-call list all the way to the Supreme Court if necessary, and the effort will require "significant resources" that surpass the association's annual revenue from dues.

"We are busy delivering on the ATA promise to the membership," Miklas said. "But it's not an easy task."

ATA officials held an invitation-only strategy session concerning the planned legal challenge yesterday. Though the meeting was not open to the press, an association spokesman said it was held to gauge membership interest in the legal challenge. Further details were unavailable.

Though the Federal Trade Commission has yet to decide about its proposed national no-call list, industry members expect a ruling from the agency sometime in October. The Federal Communications Commission also has announced interest in a national DNC list and is expected to release its decision next spring.

ATA leadership said the association remains on solid financial footing and is on track to acquire about 200 new corporate members this year. Recent conferences and events have exceeded expectations, ATA officials said.

"We are becoming a media outlet as the voice of the teleservices industry," said Jason Clawson, ATA executive director.
