Manufacturer database expands to other sectors

Manufacturers' News Inc. (MNI) has added 600,000 non-manufacturing businesses to its database in an attempt to better serve the current US market.

The expansion — the end result of a marketing agreement between MNI and another, unnamed enterprise — more than doubles MNI's original database to include approximately 1 million companies and 3 million executive names.

MNI's original database numbered 400,000 and offered information only on manufacturing companies and other industrial businesses. New industries in the MNI database include health care, financial services and education. Health services, with 67,979 companies listed, is the top added sector.

“For years, our niche has been US manufacturing establishments; that's what we do, and what people know us for,” said Tom Dubin, president, MNI. “US Manufacturing is obviously not a growing market and hasn't been for some time, and people had kind of exhausted their leads in terms of manufacturing establishments.

“Clients would say, ‘We wish you had this information on other companies,'” he continued. “So we struck a deal with an enterprise that made it a point to find niche compilers from all other sectors of the economy so that we could make available data and information about companies in those industries as well.”

Dubin said that he hopes the expansion will help MNI attract more customers that are looking for a “one-stop shop.”

Custom CD-ROMs from MNI sort companies in its expanded database by geography, SIC code, employee count and other criteria.
