Lucent Renames Call Center Division, Expands Siebel Relationship

Lucent Technologies' Enterprise Networks Group, which provides technology for call centers, yesterday unveiled its new name -- Avaya Inc. -- and said it has formed a global partnership with Siebel Systems to deliver multimedia communications solutions for e-commerce companies.

Avaya and Siebel will establish dedicated, joint product development and sales teams to create and market technology solutions for Internet-enabled contact centers. The two companies also made a multimillion-dollar commitment to jointly promote the partnership during the next year.

The agreement with Siebel, San Mateo, CA, is an extension of a partnership Lucent formed last year with the e-commerce software provider.

Lucent said earlier this year that it would spin off the division now known as Avaya as a separate company on Oct. 1. The new name was selected after focus groups said it sounded like a company that was "open, flexible and fun," said Don Peterson, president/CEO of Avaya.
