Lockheed Martin is entering the second phase of its project to create a new package-sorting system for cataloger Land's End Inc., the companies said yesterday.

Work is beginning at the cataloger's fulfillment plant in Dodgeville, WI, Lockheed Martin said. Land's End hired Lockheed Martin to conduct the second phase of the upgrade following Lockheed's completion of the first phase of the project.

Lockheed also said yesterday that it had completed a retail package sorting system for L.L. Bean at the cataloger's Freeport, ME, fulfillment center.

Lockheed finished the first phase of the Land's End upgrade in fall 2002. The system performed successfully over the peak holiday sales season, Lockheed said.

Phase one increased Land's End's package-processing capacity to 4,800 items per hour. The second phase is to boost that capacity to 7,800 items an hour.

Land's End is expected to award a contract for the third and final phase later in 2003, Lockheed said. This will increase Land's End's processing capacity to 10,800 items per hour.

The upgrade also lets Land's End consolidate single- and multiple-item orders for increased efficiency, Lockheed said. According to Lockheed, the second-phase upgrade will be complete in late summer 2003.

Financial details of the project were not disclosed. Owego, NY-based Lockheed Martin Distribution Technologies, Lockheed's mail automation and material handling technology unit, is conducting the upgrade.
