L.L. Bean Goes High and Low

L.L. Bean, Freeport, ME, dropped a special holiday catalog the first week of December with hundreds of items less than $50 and five more than $1,000.

The 88-page catalog marks the first time Bean has consolidated less than $50 merchandise in one book.

"This catalog is a subtle change in our merchandising strategy,'' said spokeswoman Jolene McGowan. "We wanted to emphasize value and get reaction to the higher priced items.''

The specialty items are a canoe set, bird feeder, telescope, leather furniture set and children's play center.
