Levine Takes Top Editorial Spot at Hearst

Ellen Levine, editor-in-chief of Good Housekeeping magazine, was named to the new position of editorial director for Hearst Magazines.

Rosemary Ellis, senior vice president and editorial director of Prevention, was appointed as Ms. Levine's replacement.

Ms. Levine made publishing history in 1994 as the first woman named editor-in-chief at Good Housekeeping. During her tenure, the publication received a National Magazine Award from the American Society of Magazine Editors in 1999 and was nominated for a National Magazine Award in general excellence in 2005.

Under Ms. Levine, Good Housekeeping's ad revenue increased 160 percent. She also launched O, The Oprah Magazine, in 2000 and worked on Weekend and Quick & Simple.

As editorial director, she will strengthen current titles and develop new ones domestically and internationally. She also will evaluate opportunities for brand extensions, books, digital alternatives and cross-promotional magazine efforts and will monitor shifting consumer needs.

Prior to working at Good Housekeeping, Ms. Levine served as editor-in-chief at Woman's Day and Redbook.

Her successor at Good Housekeeping is equally decorated. At Prevention, Ms. Ellis received a National Magazine Award nomination from the American Society of Magazine Editors for general excellence in 2006.

Both Ms. Levine and Ms. Ellis begin their new roles July 17. Good Housekeeping was founded in 1885 and reaches 25 million readers monthly. Later this year, it will unveil a new Good Housekeeping Institute in the new Hearst Tower in New York City.
