John Yeck, one of the founding members of the Direct Marketing Educational Foundation (DMEF) died last week in Dayton, OH. He was 86.

Yeck, a longtime board member of the Direct Marketing Association, was the first chairman of the DMEF and served in that position from 1965 until October 1998, when he was named chairman emeritus.

"John Yeck was the Foundation, and the Foundation was John Yeck," said Laurie Spar, vice president of the DMEF. "It was important for him to see that students were aware of this industry, and it was his dream to see the foundation succeed."

"His legacy is the thousands of men and women who are succeeding because of his dedication to their education and careers," said H. Robert Wientzen, president and CEO of the DMA. "As more and more jobs are created in the direct marketing industry, many of the talented people who will fill them owe a debt of gratitude to the man who mentored an industry."

For 32 years Yeck also served as director of the DMA.

Yeck was born in 1912 in Akron, OH. He graduated from Miami University in Oxford, OH, in 1934. Four years later he established Graphic Service, a direct mail advertising agency, which is now called Yeck Brothers Company.

Yeck Brothers Company has prepared and produced direct marketing programs for a number of major corporations including British Airways, American Express, 3M, Huffy Corporation, Price Brothers, Dayton Rubber, Pitney Bowes, Chase Manhattan Bank, John Deere, Ingersoll-Rand, Federal Express and Fleet Bank.

Yeck served as president of the Mail Advertising Service Association International (MASA) and as a board member of the Advertising Federation of America. In 1981 he was included as a member of the Direct Marketing Hall of Fame.

His wife, Willa Woodson Sanger, whom he married in 1948, passed away in 1993. He is survived by his daughter Joanne L. Yeck, granddaughter Alice McGreevey, son-in-law Tom McGreevey, and brother William S. Yeck.
