JC Penney Says Catalog, Web Sales Down

Share this article:
JC Penney Co. yesterday reported that sales at its catalog and Internet units deteriorated immediately following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks against the United States and have been slow to recover.

The Plano, TX, company projects its catalog sales to be off 30 percent in September following a forecast of a decline that was to be in the high teens.

However, the company also reported that sales at stores open at least one year were "essentially on plan" through last week. It is on track for "low-single-digit" same-store gains at its department stores for September.

Same-store sales at its Eckerd drug store chain remain on plan with a 3 percent to 4 percent increase through September.
