J.C. Penney Catalog Sales to Slip 20%

Catalog sales at J.C. Penney Co. Inc. likely will fall 20 percent for the month, the company said yesterday.


J.C. Penney also said it expects a low single-digit sales increase for department stores versus comparable-store sales last year. Also, the company said that sales for last week were on plan. The best categories for the week included home, children's and fine jewelry.


In other news, Federated Department Stores Inc. said it expects November/December comparable-store sales to be flat to down 2.5 percent.
