Info-Link's Name Leads to Mistaken Identity

A company that shares a virtually identical name with another firm that was expelled from the Direct Marketing Association last week said yesterday it had received several inquiries from its clients about the incident.

Info-Link Technologies Inc., Miami, received about eight phone calls and e-mails after DM News published a story June 20 in its e-mail newsletter and on its Web site about the DMA's expulsion of Infolink Technologies Ltd., Toronto. DMA members and staff accused the Toronto-based company of sending them unsolicited commercial faxes in violation of DMA ethical guidelines and U.S. federal law.

The confusion was exacerbated by the story's Miami dateline, said Jack Ellis, managing director of Miami-based Info-Link. The expulsion was announced by DMA president/CEO H. Robert Wientzen at the DMA Teleservices Conference 2003 in Miami.

There is no connection between Toronto-based Infolink and Miami-based Info-Link. The Toronto firm describes itself as "one of Canada's premier news and information disseminators," whereas Miami's Info-Link is a market research and list provider that specializes in information about outdoor recreation enthusiasts.
