*Hacker May Have Cracked Egghead's Database

Egghead.com Inc., Menlo Park, CA, is expected next week to announce new details on whether or not a hacker broke into its customer database, according to a company spokeswoman.


The online retailer said Friday that an individual outside its company had accessed its computer systems, a scenario that could have led to the theft of its customers' credit card numbers.


As a precautionary measure, Egghead said it contacted the credit card companies it works with and is allowing them to use its customer databases to check for fraudulent charges. The credit firms have also begun alerting card issuers and banks so that they can begin working on the security of the cardholders that may have been compromised.


The Federal Bureau of Investigation division of San Jose, CA, and Kroll Worldwide, a New York-based firm specializing in online security troubleshooting, began investigating the break-in this week.
