Groupon has hired Vertica Systems, a real-time analytics platform provider, to analyze subscriber behavior and scale its business intelligence capabilities, the daily deal site said January 18.

Chicago-based Groupon will use Vertica's platform to analyze data to attribute revenue and other performance metrics to individual consumers.

Vertica participated in an RFP process with “approximately half a dozen companies,” said Mark Johnson, chief data officer at Groupon. He added that Groupon has already “seen results that are now in the hands of decision-makers within the company” since beginning to use the service last month. Johnson declined to name the other companies that participated in the search process.

“We went with Vertica for a list of reasons,” he said. “Most notably it has strong word-of-mouth among people I've worked with in Silicon Valley and it is tremendously easy to use.”

The companies also said in a statement that Groupon selected Vertica for its Amazon Elastic Cloud Computing offering, among other reasons.

“Groupon chose Vertica because of price-performance and scale,” said Christopher Lynch, president and CEO of the analytics provider.

Groupon has been very active in its business dealings in recent months. On January 11, it raised $950 million in funding to support its infrastructure and to help it expand. It also acquired deal websites SoSasta in India, Grouper in Israel, and Twangoo in South Africa the same day. Last month, Groupon made headlines when it reportedly turned down a $6 billion acquisition offer from Google.
