Gateway Closes 27 Stores

Gateway Inc. has closed 27 of its U.S.-based Country Stores to cut costs.

Company officials said the closings affect about 500 workers, most of whom were given the chance to take other positions within the company.

"We've decided to close about 10 percent of our stores that for the most part are in very close proximity to one another," said Bart Brown, senior vice president of the company's consumer division.

Nine of the closings were in California, three in Virginia, two each in Florida, Illinois, New Jersey, New York and Texas, and one each in Georgia, Indiana, Oregon, Tennessee and Utah.

The San Diego-based company now has 299 stores nationwide, as well as others abroad.

The company said it notified employees of the closings on Monday.
